How can I learn cyber-security?
First things first…let’s make sure that we’re on the same page here about what cyber-security is. Cyber-Security is all about protecting your digital stuff. The next thing to know is that protecting your digital stuff is always gonna be about one or more of the following ideas. Make sure that you know these ideas by heart:
1. Making sure that the stuff can only be reached by those who are allowed.
2. Making sure that that stuff can only be changed by those who are allowed.
3. Making sure that the stuff is available when you need it to be.
Congratulations! Now we’re on the same page about what cyber-security is. Let’s talk about how to learn cyber-security.
Remember when you learned how to read and write? You started with the building blocks; First you learned the characters of the alphabet, then you learned the sounds that the characters made, then you learned how to string it all together in a way that made sense.
So, check it out: The brilliant folks at the United State’s National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) came up with the building blocks that you need to know to get started on learning how to protect your digital stuff it’s called the CyberSecurity Framework.
These are the basic building blocks that you want to know
- Identify
- Protect
- Detect
- Respond
- Recover
Read that again….got it…Good.
Let’s go into a little more detail about what this means.
Identify- Know what stuff you’re trying to protect
Protect- Put something in place to protect the stuff from access and changes that are not alowed or loss of availability.
Detect- Put something in place to help you know when your stuff has been access or changed without permission, or if your stuff is not available.
Respond- Make a plan to stop the attacks that you find out about.
Recover- Make a plan to get your stuff back to the way that it was before the attack.
